Veteran’s Tree Project was a culmination of hand prints from each of the veterans and their spouses from the Michael J Fitzmaurice Veterans Home. The process started by using a pencil to outline their hands on a piece of paper. Once drawn, the image was cut out using scissors to create a stencil. The stencil was attached to the wall using a spray fixative. Veterans and their spouses would then choose their favorite color to be painted over their stencil. Once the stencil dried, it was peeled away from the wall. Lastly, within each of the handprints, we included the Veteran’s branch of service and the time period they served.
Thank you to the South Dakota Arts Council Artists In Schools & Communities Grant for my one week residency at Michael J Fitzmaurice Veterans Home in Hot Springs South Dakota.
