Empowered Youth, (a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of inner-city youth), the Belafonte Tacolcy Center, and the community of Liberty City all took part in the overall design and painting of the Liberty City mural. The theme focused on gang violence, community relations, civic pride, social justice, and community wellness. The Liberty City Mural was considered one of the first “community” mural in the heart of Liberty City. Since then, a mural movement spawned throughout Liberty City that continues to this day.
