Between-The-Pulse was a connection between health and wellness through the arts at the Walking Nature Trail in Estill, South Carolina. Four creative stations: Creative Moves, Visual Stimuli, One-On-One, and Sing-A-Tune!, were located between the Fit-Trail workout stations along the Walking Nature Trail. Each of the four creative stations provided instructions along with an outline of health and wellness benefits. A social media component was also added where community members could upload their talents, i.e., singing and dancing. Once a month awards (gift certificate) would be presented to the most talented based on creativity, originality, and talent. |
Between-The-Pulse was funded with support from the USDA Office of Rural Development; The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation through a Community Arts Development partnership with The Art of Community: Rural SC and Maven Audrey Hopkins-WIlliams; The South Carolina Arts Commission; Community members who participated in the building of Between-the-Pulse; City of Estill Parks and Recreation; City of Estill Police Department; Town Council Members: Tammy Solomon, Charles E. Savino, Dwanda Bolden, Joe N. Hadwin Jr., and Mayor Corrin F. Bowers lll. Special thanks to the Hampton County Arts Council. |

Blackville is. . . was a socially engaged project using postcards with the written message: Blackville is. . . . Community members were encouraged to write three words or less to complete the sentence: Blackville is . . . The backside of each postcard was left blank offering participants to illustrate their words as a visual representation of Blackville is . . . . Postcards were then dropped off in a Blackville is . . . mailbox located at City Hall or the post office. Postcards were chosen by prominent members of the community that reflected a common theme concerning identity, culture, race/community relations, pride, celebrations, history, diversity, and inclusion. Community members were invited March 23rd of 2019 to help paint the chosen words on a sidewalk which was once the site of railroad tracks. This participatory event was intended to create an ongoing dialogue between members of the community about place, community, finding common ground and interests, while building new relationships. |
|
Blackville is… was supported by: South Carolina Arts Commission, The Art of Community: Rural SC; National Endowment for the Arts; State of South Carolina and USDA-Rural Development; Blackville Community Development Corporation (BCDC); Maven, Evelyn Coker and the Blackville Community Team; Town Council Members: Stephen L Jowers , Sr., M. Ann Pernell, Kelvin Isaac, Allen Harris, Frenchie Smalls, Fredrick B. Orr, and Mayor Michael L. Beasley. |

Symbols Project was a community project organized to create various new logos for the town of Wilson, Arkansas. It was to represent Wilson’s new revitalization. Concepts and ideas were researched and designed through group conversation between students, staff from The Delta School and the overall community. Proposed symbols were then painted along a popular trail surrounding the historic Wilson Trade School; a once public school for the African American community. While the community enjoyed walking throughout the trial, they would also reflect on each of the symbols in the hopes to create a discussion in choosing a new town logo. Symbols Project was supported by a grant from the Arkansas Arts Council, City of Wilson, and The Delta School. |

REFLECTIONS was a digital installation at the 1939 Art Deco Siston Theater in Sisseton, South Dakota. The objective was to create the illusion/prop of a working theater consisting of an “inside-out” experience using light sensitive screens and digital projectors. Images of paintings and photography were paired with statements, stories, and/or poetry; reflecting on identity, history, culture, displacement, customs, history, and the natural landscape of Sisseton and the Lake Traverse Reservation. Participants included artists from both the local community and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, and students and teachers from the Sisseton Wahpeton College and the Sisseton High School and Middle School. |
REFLECTIONS was funded by the Sisseton Arts Council as well as the South Dakota Arts Council. |
|
Walking Together was an installation planned as a cross-cultural celebration between the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe and the non-native community of Sisseton. The celebration was also to break down cultural and social barriers, misconceptions, and representations that have plagued the native community for so long. The celebration was held in the Agency VillageTribal Administration Building. The Sisseton community and members of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe came together during this cross-cultural celebration by way of bringing in a pair of shoes or footwear that would best identify cultural and social roles within each of their communities. All footwear was then placed side by side on buffalo hide to form a spiral timeline based on the age of the participant; beginning with infant footwear. Afterwards, attendees gathered together to break bread of traditional meals that were native to each of the cultures represented. |
|
Walking Together was funded by the South Dakota Arts Council Artist in Communities Grant and the Sisseton Arts Council. |

Sisseton Art Walk began as a community meeting to discuss ways and means of revitalizing downtown Sisseton as an arts and cultural destination. Markus suggested a community-wide outdoor art gallery where artists in town and those from the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, would take part in creating works of art on wooden panels. Once completed, these panels would then be mounted on the exterior side of buildings along Veterans Boulevard. The Sisseton Arts Council overwhelmingly approved the Sisseton Art Walk idea. Within a month10 panels were completed by artists along with students from Sisseton Public Schools assisting artist through planned community meetings. Art work ranged from paintings, photography, poetry, creative writing, installations, and vinyl prints. Themes ranged from cross-cultural celebrations, the understanding of customs, histories, and traditions, the wonderment and future of our children, environmental preservation, and the reflection of Sisseton’s diverse landscape and wildlife. |
Sisseton Art Walk was funded by the South Dakota Arts Council Artist in Communities Grant and the Sisseton Arts Council. |

Marble Manor Enhancement Program was a community enhancement program involving the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs, Las Vegas Arts Commission, United Way, Housing Authority of the City of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and members of the Marble Manor community. The goals of the enhancement program was to address the lack of community services; safety concerns throughout the Marble Manor community; and relationship building between the Las Vegas Police Department, Las Vegas Housing Authority, and the Marble Manor community. I was lead project coordinator hiring artists Dayo Adelaja, Mark Melnick and architect, Anne Johnson. Both Dayo and Mark worked closely with members of the Marble Manor community to assemble a two-part community mural at the community park. Anne worked with the City Planning Department to redesigned the interior and exterior entryways of the Marble Manor Community Center, the interior floor and a new computer lab. Lastly, Schilling Horticulture volunteered time to recreate an urban desert-scape throughout the community park by choosing plants that were native to the natural surroundings of the desert. This in turn reintroduced native wildlife such as butterflies, birds, and insects adds an educational experience for the overall community. |
Marble Manor Enhancement Program was supported by the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs; Las Vegas Arts Commission; United Way; Housing Authority of the City of Las Vegas; Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department; and members of the Marble Manor community. |
