The Atrium Project

The Atrium Project | 2023 | acrylic on glass | 12’’ x 30’ | Smithfield-Selma High School

The Atrium Project is a silhouette of fruits and vegetables that are native to the state of North Carolina; to include the state mammal, the eastern gray squirrel; the state tree, the pine; and the state bird, the Cardinal. The Atrium Project looks into a courtyard located within the Foods Hallway of Smithfield-Selma High School. As the sun rises from the east and makes its way to the west, shadows from the fruits and vegetables appear as if they are growing in size. The Atrium Project was to address North Carolina’s natural resources in agriculture; awareness of healthy food choices; and the celebration of environmental preservation and conservation.

Thanks goes out to Smithfield-Selma High School students, staff, and art teacher, Megan Hill Pike for their amazing collaboration and support during my one month artist-in-residence. Special thanks to the North Carolina Arts Council, North Carolina Arts in Education Artist Residency Grant.
