Learning to Grow

Learning to Grow | 1995 | acrylic on cinder block | 3,500 sq. ft. | Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Learning to Grow community mural at Washington Park was one of the largest community murals in Albuquerque measuring at 3,500 square feet. The mural depicts the four seasons and how each of the seasons reference celebrations of cross-cultural stories and folklore of Albuquerque’s multicultural city. The Learning to Grow community mural was also by far a huge success addressing issues related to gang violence; graffiti on private property; and relationship building among Albuquerque’s diverse community.

Partners included the City of Albuquerque; Keep Albuquerque Beautiful (an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful); students from Washington Middle School; Albuquerque Fire Department; nonprofit and for-profit organizations; community artists, Barbara Grothus and Michale Ipiotis; and lastly, Washington Middle School teacher, Suki Harada.
