Crosswalk Mural was a collaboration between Sisseton artist, Nicholas Blaske and artist, Markus Tracy. Additional support came from art teacher and artist Alexis Monroe and community members Darin Krump and Emily Norman. The Crosswalk mural stretches across Veterans Boulevard on Walnut Street.
The Crosswalk Mural design represents a cross-cultural connection between the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and community members of Scandinavian descent. The center white star or flower is the dominant design within the crosswalk. For the Sioux Tribe, the center design symbolizes the morning star which represents hope, guidance, and the four cardinal directions. For those of Scandinavian descent, the center design represents traditional Norwegian rosemaling which is decorative folk art inspired by the rose flower. The use of the rose flower symbolizes love, longing, and admiration of Norway.
Crosswalk Mural supported by National Endowment for the Arts; South Dakota Arts Council; Sisseton Arts Council; and Grow South Dakota.
